Just what the iPad ordered

I have this problem, I have 4,000 plus tracks of music and want to get a 16gb iPad. I can tell you it won’t fit there! What if I had lala installed on my server? I could just just use lala.com, check my recent plays list, but then it will interfere with other down load access. I began to think, hey I have this thing the internet, maybe someone has had this problem before. I did some looking and found Sockso, an open source java based music server that gives you search, play list and browsing of your collection. It is simple to setup and use. I had it in place and serving up my collection in 10 minutes. I set up a test at work and forced it to only allow registered users to access my collection.

One of the features I find brilliant is that ability to select how you will play your music. On your local web page you can select from seven different ways to play including a pop-out flash player or a play list download for your default player. Sockso can also change the encoding of your must, if needed.

I think this is the answer to using your music at home, or remotely if you open a path through your firewall, on your iPad or netbook.

New media – New world

I just watched the William Shatner show Raw Nerve with Weird Al Yankovic.During the very interesting show Al talked about his new album that will be released a song at a time until all are available as an album, in about a year. The reason I am writing about this is the comments made about the record label deal for this album. While no amount was mentioned, he made it clear that his share was too small considering the minimal overhead in delivering a digital copy.

Al, if you read this then drop that label and move forward on your own. Take a look how Jonathan Coulton is marketing his works. He too is a niche artist. You do not have to giveup control and income to have a

Zune part III, The rebirth

It began as any other update, a button click and an answer, “Update Now”.
11:20 – the preparation begins
11:22 – More preparation?
11:23 – The install begins, you must disconnect your Zune player to install the software.
11:25 – Windows must restart.
11:33 – Zune software back up. Connected my 4gb player, installing new driver
11:36 – Ready to install player update now. Making it so.
11:40 – Distracted
11:59 – Returned to find message saying player is updated.

The interface has a new feature, games. You get two games, Hexic , and Texas Hold’em. I tried Hexic and this is going to be a huge time waster, and a bit fun too. haven’t tried Texas Hold’em yet but I expect to lose big.
The Radio section has the ability to buy songs you hear on the radio.
The marketplace menu selection has the ability to connect to your wireless network and talk to the Zune store, showing top music and the like and even letting you play 30 sec previews. This is going to be a big deal! The Zune may just be starting to give the iPod a run for its money.

All told the upgrade went smooth and is worth the time, so go for it.

Is there a secret hidden in this music?

The Secret story in Jonathan Coulton’s music

As I listen to the fine music of Jonathan I begin to see a pattern. Has he hidden a story in the songs? We just have to arrange them in the correct order to see it. I have listed, in order, the songs I think show the secret story.

That spells DNA – Planning his (re)birth
Skullcrusher mountain – Dad and mom meet for the first time.
Womb with a view – His first memory

Stroller town – He had a fine childhood, beach boy style.
Summers over – School was a trying time
Millionaire girlfriend – Looking for love in any place that he won’t have to work.
Code monkey – He finally found love at work
My Monkey – The courtship.
Betty and me – Married at last.
See you in hell – The kids are here!

Re:your brains – The zombies showed up, who knew!
Chiron beta prime – the robots showed up?
Podsafe Christmas music – Escaped and made it back home in time for Christmas

Take care of me – The beginning of the end
You ruined everything – The divorce, it was a amicable one

Ikea – living alone
Kenesau Mountain Landis – Meets a relative at the ball game, an uncle I think.
The Presidents – He gets politically minded
Creepy Doll – Moved to a rural town
Furry old lobster – A rural town on the coast
Drinking with you – Getting the blues about it all
Curl – His favorite sport

Resolutions – Recovery begins
Still Alive – Well,
We will rock you -
We are the champions – He’s back!

What do you think, a secret hidden story or just a coincidence?

Zune – the social

Well here is the second part of my Zune review. after trying several things I have found that the wireless sync is less than there, right now. Even though the sync setup is done I still can not sync over the wireless. I also have not been able to find another Zune nearby to swap files with.

I did find that the guest feature is great. I can connect up and put of my podcasts on and move things off to a backup system without purging the device. I like the ability to change the background image on the device and the touch feature to the control surface.

This web based social thing is also of interest. I will post my Zune card here. It will have information about me and the things I have on my Zune. keep checking back, more will follow.
