Cloud printing for the poor

2

I was going through my chrome options this morning, trying to find a way to reduce the visible size of the app screen  and found “cloud printing”?

This feature showed up in Chrome v9 apperently, I just didn’t notice. So I set it up and checked to see if I could print from my ipad to the desktop printer. It worked! I can even print from my iPod touch on IOS 4.2

Setting up was a breeze. Just click on the wrench and go to options then the under the hood tab. Sign in to “Cloud print” and your off.

I tested it with my iPad and Google docs. I tried two different docs and both printed just as they should. You are offered a choice of printers, based on what you have installed on the computer.

Currently the spreadsheet did not offer a cloud print choice.

I then used team viewer to setup cloud printing on a home computer with a printer and WOW. There is the printer at home. I could be anywhere and send a print-job to a printer at work or at home!

This is just one more reason to use chrome and Google docs for your word processing needs.

Hulu on the IPad?

0

Hulu the free online video hub has some interesting things on the horizon, according to the NYT.

Hulu has made it’s online video site successful, and brought free tv and movies to the masses. four people at Hulu said that it may be bringing out an app for the IPad. The ability to watch the tv shows i missed or my favorite shows and movies on my shiny new IPad just makes my mouth water.

But the companies that supply content for hulu.com, want them to bring in more advertising revenue and charge subscriptions. So they can get larger kickbacks i’m sure. Hulu’s Mr Kilar said. “We’re certainly open to subscriptions as a complement to an ad-supported model.”

People briefed on Hulu’s plan said they may test the subscription service with the IPad app, but had no information on when it would be available.

My opinion is that the free service is great, its no worse than watching tv with commercials and it brings in revenue for hulu and its content suppliers. But if they wanted to add a subscription service for premium shows and new movies that would be fine. Let people opt in or out of the premium services, but with a paid premium plan, I would expect NO ADS. If they try to change Hulu to be a subscription service only, their content suppliers may find the Hulu audience hit all time lows. I for one have a netflix subscription and the disc for my Wii, so i do not need another subscription for online video, and would probably abandon Hulu if it chose this path.

Let me know what you think.

Microsoft fires one over the bow

0

In an article by Paul Thurrott, he talks about a test, run at Sophos, that points to Windows 7 still being vulnerable to 80% of the virus’s tested. Microsoft responds to Sophos pointing out that it was never claimed that Windows 7 would not need an antivrus solution. In fact Microsoft recommends that you get a antivrus solution as part of you system protection strategy.  As talked about in the article, I believe this is bogus test announced just to reinforce the Sophos name as an antivirus solution.

Here is the post that started it all.

Below is the comment I posted at the Windows IT Pro article.

The reason this is a bogus test and brings the trust of Sophos in to question is that they are stating the obvious as a revelation. Mush the same way other companies state the norm as a feature. An example of that is the milk you buy. The low fat milk with 50% less fat, this is they went from 4% in the mix to 2% in the mix. The bigger number makes you feel like it is less.

Stating that a new operating system is still vulnerable to a system compatible virus is like saying the new baby is still able to get sick. You still have to give the baby antivirus shots and still have to take care of it.

As for prepackaging an antivirus solution, that would be great, until some European entity opens yet another lawsuit about unfair business practices.

Zunerific update

0

There was an update to the Zune today, v3.1. It added new games, Sudoku, Space Battle and Checkers. There were also bug fixes and other features added, such as like minded listeners. We’ll see how that works out presently. Also don’t forget to claim your free audio book from Audible courtesy of Zune.

I am happy to see Microsoft adding to the zune experience as well as fixing the bugs on a regular basis. Early on I was worried they would drop the Zune due to slow adoption. If Microsoft keeps up the good work they may in fact have created the iPod killer.
