Today’s term is byte. A byte is made up of eight bits. It is 11111111 in binary, 377 octal, 255 decimal and FF in base 16 or hex . A byte is one character when sent to a printer. Years ago, when the microprocessors were not so compact the architecture was based around the eight bit byte. Although the eight bit byte is the most used standard there were machine built with the byte ranging from five to twelve bits in length.
