when returning to work, after my CHF scare, I found out that we had a email phishing expidition hit campus. They pretended to be us, the technogolgy departmens and asked for the persons password. Being dense as a rock they replied and gave their password. They then found 20,000 failed emails in thier mail box on monday.
After being advised over and over, told not to reply to messages. That we NEVER ask you to email your password to us, just like the banks don’t ask it. They still replied and gave up the password, their account was used for at least two days to send spam email before the password was changed and evennow their email address is used as the from entry.
I can only assume that the person got complacent about the campus email, we have anti spam measures in place and most of it is caught, causing them to not read the message as carefully as the should.
DO NOT SEND PASSWORDS IN AN EMAIL. DO NOT REPLY TO PEOPLE YOU DO NOT ALREADY KNOW OR HAVE NOT ARRANGED TO COMMUNICATE WITH.
YES THAT WAS TWENTY THOUSAND BOUNCED EMAIL MESSAGES.
